What is Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement Surgery?
The direct anterior approach for hip replacement is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows the hip joint to be replaced without cutting through muscles or tendons. Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, which involves significant muscle disruption, this approach preserves muscle integrity, leading to a quicker recovery.

Anterior Hip Replacement Procedure
Anterior hip replacement surgery is performed under general or regional anesthesia. The patient lies on their back on a specialized surgical table that allows access to the hip joint from the front. Fluoroscopic imaging may be used to ensure precise placement of the prosthetic components and to minimize leg length discrepancies.

A small incision, approximately 4 inches long, is made at the front of the hip. The muscles are carefully moved aside rather than cut to access the joint. The worn-out femoral head is removed, and the acetabular socket is prepared using a reamer. The new acetabular component is then secured with screws or cement, and a liner made of plastic, metal, or ceramic is placed inside.

The femur is then prepared to receive a new metal femoral component, which is secured using either a press-fit technique or bone cement. A ceramic or metal femoral head is placed onto the femoral stem. Once the artificial components are securely positioned, the instruments are withdrawn, and the incision is closed with sutures and covered with a sterile dressing.

Post-operative Care for Anterior Hip Replacement

However, since the anterior approach spares muscles, these precautions are generally unnecessary, allowing for a more comfortable and flexible recovery.
